[Review]Atlanta is a Different Kind of Project for Donald Glover

I’ve been a huge Childish Gambino fan for about 8 years now, and quite enjoyed Donald Glover’s work in Community. However his new show Atlanta is a different approach for the rapper and actor, and that isn’t a bad thing.

I went into the first episode with high expectations of being able to laugh nonstop, given his stand-up routine and style on Community.

I was slightly disappointed.

Luckily that was the only disappointment. The way I would categorize it, is this is Glover’s Horace and Petes(Louie CKs TV show). It’s funny, but it isn’t constantly funny. It’s not a perfect analogy but it works.

Atlanta follows Earn(Glover) on his life in Atlanta.

Overall, it was amazing. It has an all black writing crew, and a mainly black cast, and it works well. It makes it true to Atlanta life. It’s actually really hard to describe what the show is about, but I highly recommend watching it. It’s funny, it’s serious, and it’s an excellent social commentary. And if you’re still on the edge about Donald Glover’s new show, the first episode is available on youtube for free, and embedded below.
